A Winter Night

I have to fight this

So many hours left
Peeling a pear with a knife
Juice dripping
Onto your hands
Sticky fingers
No reason to discard
Any portion of this
Every piece is
Just as sweet as the last
It makes me think
Trying to remember
The last time I ate a pear
Last time I had any other fruit
Wondering why I deny myself
The luxury
Of nature’s candy
It makes me think
Of how much my Grandmother
Loves to bake
And make fruit salad
To eat with custard
Which she made herself
It makes me think
Of how much my Grandmother
Loves to make
Chocolate fudge
Cooling on the back porch
On a winter night
